Overview

The first and last sections of this route are monotonous but the middle section, hiking along the narrows of Rentina, is quite interesting.

Description

From Modi head north towards the football field and continue on tracks to the historic chapel of Agia Marina. Continue along the national road and soon after  turn right on a track along Rihios river. After about 1km you will arrive at a junction where the track turns right uphill.  A paved trail parallel to the track leads to the ruins of the Rentina Byzantine castle. Although the site is closed to the public it is only a small diversion offering very nice views of the valley. Back at the river continue along its southern bank comfortably under the shade of plane trees. There is sparse waymarking with ribbons. The footpath eventually joins a dirt road by a water tap and bench. Follow this track (destroyed by erosion) to a pen and continue on a broad track to the meet the paved road coming from Stavros near its junction with the national road to Kavala. The rest is on roads as designated on the map.

There is no accommodation in Ano Vrasna. Stay in Nea Vrasna.

Transportation

Ano Vrasna may only be reached by taxi. The bus service to Thessaloniki and Asprovalta passes by Nea Vrasna a few kilometers east near the beach.
