Overview

Along the alpine pastures of Paggaio down to the planes of Strimonas. This is a long and demanding hike exposed to the sun and with orientation difficulties in case of foggy weather. Nevertheless the landscape and vistas are rewarding.

Description

Take the path behind the refuge  ascending steeply to reach a pass below Trikorfo peak. Trikorfo and Mati peaks are a short climb from here. Now ignore the O4 poles that mark an alternative route to Ikosifinissa monastery, and descent towards the bottom of the valley on the other side of the pass.  Gradually, a trail well trodden by cows, becomes visible and you descent very gently along pastures full with wild flowers.  After a rocky section the valley becomes deeper and the trail turns away from it traversing the steep grassy slopes to eventually join a track coming from Rodolivos just before a shepherd's hut. You may choose to follow this track to the right to reach the village in about 2 hours. Alternatively keep on the track that ends by a trough with icy cold water.

Continue on a good trail to a broad saddle and trail junction and turn right traversing north of Koumpili peak to reach another saddle. Amazing views to all directions. Continue on the ridge along ill defined trails to yet another saddle. Now the trail becomes clear again and concludes by a shepherd's hut and track. Follow the track to the left, soon through forest, to reach Rodolivos mountain refuge after about 3km. Continue along the track for another 4km down to the bottom of the valley and eventually walk to the village.

Amenities

Rodolivos is a small town with several amenities (shops, post-office, hospital). There are also a couple of hostels.

Sufficiently signed until the pass below Trikorfo. Only a couple of old O4 poles after that.

Transportation

Regular bus to Thessaloniki and Serres.
