Overview

A surprising ascent from Kavala promenade to the ridge of Symvolo mountain followed by a long hike along the ridge with splendid views.

Description

Find Egnatia street and follow it uphill until it joins Makedonia street by a bus stop. Turn left along a paved track soon becoming a cobble-stone paved path. This is the Ancient Egnatia road,  one of its most well preserved segments still standing today. The path ascent along a gully with lush vegetation and finishes just below the hospital of Kavala. Continue on the other side of a roundabout past the main entrance of the hospital and pass a bridge below the motorway. You may now continue along the paved track ahead all the way to the ridge or follow a path visible to the right. The path is steep at places and is longer than the alternative. Both are under the shade of the pine forest. Once on the ridge follow that broad dirt road along it. There are a lot of kilometers to cover and the the route is probably monotonous. Nevertheless you may enjoy the very nice views towards the sea and the plane of Philipi. The route is partly shaded. Eventually just after a waste transfer station turn right on a track and follow it downhill to the outskirts of Eleftheroupoli.
