Overview

This segment follows the old trail to Kokkala village (now in ruins) and then the ridge to Polinero settlement deep into the heart of Lekani mountains. It is an easy and interesting walk.

Description

From Palia Kavala square turn left, past the church and then find a signed track that descends to the stream. Cross the stream and continue gently on a footpath on its left side among old terraces. The path has a tendency to become overgrown but is otherwise annually maintained since it is a segment of a mountain bike race. Later cross to the right side of the stream and after passing more terraces and an old trough you have to turn left away from the valley climbing towards the electricity pylon on the ridge ahead. Once on the ridge cross a dirt road and start descending on the other side of the ridge on a faint path below the power line. Soon the path becomes clear, but a bit overgrown, still easily passable. After passing a dry stream and an old fountain turn right and continue along terraces. Now the path is quite faint as it traverses smooth grassy slopes but with beautiful views of the rocky gorge ahead. Soon you will encounter traces of a track and following it you will emerge to a stable. Follow the track that comes here to join a larger track. You can make a worthwhile diversion here, by turning left along this road that leads to the site of the deserted Kokkala village after just 1km, overlooking the small gorge ahead. The village was burned to the ground by the Bulgarians during WWII. The yard of the chapel is ideal for camping. Turning back follow the road up to the ridge again to join a wide track.

Turn left along the track that leads to Korifes settlement but after 300m turn left on a small track that traverses the western slopes of the hill ahead and joins the paved road coming from Korifes towards Likostomo and Platamonas. Turn left along the tarmac, unfortunately the shortest alternative,  to conclude this section in Polinero after about 4km.
