Overview

This segment follows tracks along the mountain ridge to Kokkala village (now in ruins) and then the old path to Palia Kavala. It is an easy and interesting walk.

Description

Get on the main road to Palia Kavala and Platamonas and turn left along it. About 500m after the junction to Likostomo turn right on a faint track that traverses on the west of the hill ahead to rejoin the ridge. Then turn right on a track signed to Kokkala. Before reaching Kokkala there is a junction to the left where the route continues. You can make a worthwhile diversion here, by continuing straight on to the site of the deserted Kokkala village after just 1km, overlooking the small gorge ahead. The village was burned to the ground by the Bulgarians during WWII. The yard of the chapel is ideal for camping. Turning back to the junction follow the road to the left that finished before a stable. Continue on a faint track over grassy slopes and terraces. Soon the track fades out. Continue in the same direction without losing much height with occasional traces of the old path. Eventually emerge by a dry stream and old dry fountain where the path becomes clear. Start now ascending gently along a distinct but overgrown path, still easily passable, to rejoin the ridge past an electricity high voltage line.

Cross a track and descend on the other side of the ridge among low bushes down to the gully visible ahead. Once on the stream-bed turn right and follow a small path on the left of the gully. Soon the path becomes clear and signposted. Continue close to the stream crossing several terraces and an old trough. Eventually the path crosses the stream and continues now through forest on the right side of the stream. Cross the stream once more, by a shrine, to emerge at the outskirts of Palia Kavala.

Amenities

There is a taverna in Palia Kavala but no accommodation.
